ASFONA 2012 Associate Board members meeting addresses …

Posted By: Richard Tan on February 12, 2012 at 4:46 pm

The North American hotel market continues its steady climb out of the economic slump of the past 5 years, according to research presented at the first ASFONA (Association of Starwood Franchisees & Owners – North America) Associate Board Members meeting of 2012. The meeting, which was held at The St. Regis Atlanta in mid-January, was attended by a number of Starwood senior corporate management, together with hotel owners, franchisees and hotel management company executives, as well as ASFONA associate members representing some of the most highly respected suppliers to the hotel industry.

Bobby Bowers, vice president of operations for Smith Travel Research (STR), opened the meeting with an overview of the North American lodging industry, including data tracking market conditions over the past 5 years, with a specific focus on the top 15 markets in the U.S.A. The research showed improved industry REVPAR growth in the U.S., which experienced an 8.2% gain in 2011, up from 5.5% in 2010. Other positive indicators in the U.S. market in 2011 included a 3.7% gain in ADR.

ASFONA’s Owner Board Members confirmed these industry findings, reporting that owners, franchisees and hotel management companies with Starwood brands in North America experienced impressive REVPAR and occupancy growth in 2011.

“Hotels with Starwood brands have shown excellent results overall and will continue to benefit from the strength and support of one of the world’s leading hotel organizations. With steady market improvement annually over the past several years, the hotel industry is on a positive trajectory and although some economic challenges do continue, there are enough indicators to be extremely optimistic for healthy industry growth in North America for 2012,” said John Shingler, ASFONA president.

Additional presentations by senior Starwood brand management executives at the meeting demonstrated the strength and excellence of each of Starwood’s nine global brands, including their respective target market demographics, design rationale, guest preferences and unique characteristics of each brand within the portfolio. In addition Starwood’s chief global supply chain officer provided the group with remarkable insight into the strategy associated with managing the organization’s global procurement operation.

ASFONA’s philanthropic initiatives were also apparent, as Pam Landwirth of Give Kids the World and John Belden, CEO of Davidson Hotels & Resorts, teamed up to enlist the support of the board members to raise funds for renovations needed at the 70-acre Central Florida resort village dedicated to granting the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses.

On the second day of the meeting, attendees heard an informative presentation on the global cotton market, which explained the factors leading to volatility in linen prices, its impact on the hotel industry, and possible strategies to control costs and maximize guest satisfaction. A round table discussion by ASFONA’s honorary board members and suppliers concluded the session.

“Through relationships with our Associate Members, the ASFONA Owners Board of Directors continues to secure pertinent new industry and marketplace information to provide its members with enhanced industry knowledge that can help them create additional operational efficiencies,” stated Shingler.

NORTHWIND Adds Management Strategy Services – Article Details

Posted By: Richard Tan on February 10, 2012 at 3:48 pm

NORTHWIND has expanded its Professional Services offering with the addition of Management Strategy Services to ensure hotel owners and managers are using the powerful capabilities of the Maestro hotel management system to maximize their operational efficiencies and productivity levels as well as reduce costs and drive revenue. NORTHWIND provides the Maestro Property Management hotel software Suite for the industry’s leading independent hotels, resorts, and multi-property groups.  Click here to learn more about Maestro’s solutions for profitability and productivity.

Maestro Management Strategies Services Increase Productivity and Revenue

Maestro Management Services analyze a property’s operating environment and shape best practices that complement their specific business needs and deliver bottom line performance across all areas of a property’s operations. The Maestro Management Strategies team works closely with hotel executives and their staff to improve organizational performance, guest service and profits with the best use of Maestro.  The approach focuses on extensive in-depth operations consulting and management experience that enables clients to use Maestro as a business tool to maximize productivity and boost financial returns from day-to-day operations.

The services have already proven to bring great benefits to the clients that have taken advantage of them. Tony Cheung, Revenue and Yield Manager for the BodyHoliday resort at LeSport on St. Lucia, said “Maestro’s professional team was very helpful in identifying areas where we are underutilizing our system. They showed us how we could achieve optimal operations that will increase our revenue opportunities. We are currently reviewing adding additional Maestro software modules to enhance our resort and training to develop our teams.”

Web Connection Online Marketing Services Boost Direct Bookings

NORTHWIND’s expanded Web Connection Online Marketing Services help operators develop, design, and broadcast more effective email promotions that boost reservations. “NORTHWIND’s team helped us create new email marketing strategies and program fulfillment,” said Jeremy Neill, marketing specialist for the Four-Diamond Sparkling Hill Resort. “With NORTHWIND’s help, we developed a new eNewsletter format that includes property news and special offers that increased both website traffic and reservations. NORTHWIND segmented our guest database and developed templates we use for our promotional offers, like our ‘locals special.’ We develop our content with NORTHWIND and send them the recipient list we want to target. Our work with Maestro has been very successful for our property.”  With Maestro’s single image database and 360 degree guest view, operators can analyze and identify their guests’ stay patterns and activity preferences, then create targeted campaigns and offers that fill rooms during seasonal soft periods.

Maestro Enhanced Social Media Services Enable Operators to Be Where Their Guests Are

Maestro Social Media strategies and tools enable operators to leverage Facebook, Twitter, and other social channels to connect with shoppers online. Maestro experts help properties promote specials and create tools that enable guests to book rooms directly from Facebook. “Working with Maestro’s marketing services team has been amazing,” said Jeremy Vandermeij, creative director for the Gladstone Hotel. “They helped us to integrate our social media presence with their Maestro PMS.  They built a widget that lets guests book rooms directly from our social media sites. The booking widget even shows a photo of the room. NORTHWIND went to the trouble of getting a screen capture of our web page. The tabs at the top lead shoppers to the appropriate pages with a slideshow or gallery that make it very easy to book our rooms.”

Ex-militants bomb hotel in Delta

Posted By: Richard Tan on February 6, 2012 at 2:46 pm

By Emma Amaize

WARRI – EX-MILITANTS undergoing training under the Federal Government Amnesty Programme, Monday, bombed a hotel, (name withheld) , Osubi in Okpe local government area of Delta State, which served as their temporal home since last year.

The ex-militants alleged that the consultant was colluding with the management of the hotel to  deprive them of their entitlements and shelled the hotel with dynamites.

The hotel management and a source close to the consultant, Generic College, however, described the allegation as unfounded.

It was gathered that the ex-militants were not interested in staying in the hotel or undergoing any training and what they simply wanted was for the consultant to give them money meant for their hotel accommodation and other allowances.

It was gathered that for some months running, it had been a running battle between the consultant and the recalcitrant ex-militants.

When Vanguard visited the hotel, it was discovered that a section of the two-storey building collapsed as a result of the bombing. Several rooms were affected and the debris of the shattered blocks, doors and roof were all over the place.

Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim MammanTsafe, Director of SSS in the state, Area Commanders of Police in Ughelli and Warri visited the scene of the incident, Monday.

The Joint Task Force on the Niger-Delta, Anti-Terrorism Squad and Anti-Bomb Squad were said to have made some arrest as the time of our visit but the details were not available.

An official of the hotel who spoke to Vanguard said he got a report at about 4.00 am on Monday that the hotel was collapsing and rushed down to the hotel, only to find the ex-militants in a “war” mood.

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 31, 2012 – SIPP International Industries Inc. (OTCPK: SIPN), the diversified parent company to several divisions in the food, medical, hotel and broadcasting industries announced today that the company anticipates strong growth in 2012.  The growth will be fuelled by $4..2 million in short-term accounts receivables, the latest acquisition of Newport Creek Hospitality’s growing list of hospitality management contracts, SIPP products distribution, and through television exposure driven by the launch of the “Chef Homer Lee Thomas Show.”  SIPP International Industries (SIPP) anticipates Newport Creek Hospitality to generate profit margins up to 50 percent on all hotel property management contracts. Currently, Newport Creek Hospitality has three hotel management contracts in Japan.

“We are in a unique position to be able to leverage our executive staff and infrastructure to keep our overhead costs at a minimum and profit margins at a higher level,” stated Mr. Pearson, CEO and Chairman of SIPP. “Additionally we know that once we reach critical mass in any region, the profit margins from our management fees increase exponentially. We anticipate a strong 2012 partially fuelled by our credit arrangements with First Fidelity, Inc., our planned SIPP products distribution, television productions, and Chinas emerging market in the hotel sector,” concluded Mr. Pearson.

SIPP anticipates this number to increase dramatically into China, other neighbouring countries, and the US in 2012. Growth is anticipated due to the company actively seeking hotel opportunities in the areas of third party management contracts or through acquisitions or leases.
